Technology has made the dream of the global village a hard-core reality today, with tourism encompassing various purposes- travel, conferencing, study, sport and pilgrimages. Whatever the reasons for people to travel around, the fact is that tourism as a global industry surely is advancing in leaps and bounds, leading to new employment opportunities opening up in the Hospitality Industry.
This fast growing tourism industry has risen to be the single largest revenue earning industry, not only in India, but also the world over, accounting for almost 12% of the world’s economic output and offering nearly 250 million jobs worldwide!!
Asia continues to be one of the fastest growing tourism destinations of the world, with south America and Africa in close pursuit. Europe and the Middle East too are still growing further and picking up momentum very fast in recent years.
During the last few years, the Indian economy too has been undergoing a definite shift from the manufacturing industry in fact surpassed the manufacturing industry both in revenues and profitability. As a result of this, the employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry are diminishing, whereas the same are growing at a fast pace in the service industry. In fact it is estimated that total direct employment in the tourism sector is around 20 million.
As per Mr. Yogi Deveshwar, chairman of ITC, “tourism is an Industries”, The Industry earns Rs 30,000 crores per annum in foreign exchange, 50% of which is accounted for by hotel and restaurants. The Hospitality Industry in India alone employs over three million people, growing at an average of 18% every year!!
Not only this, but the entrance of international hospitality majors has provided further impetus to this industry, making it a much favoured profession on account of its exceptional growth opportunities, including overseas job offers as well.
